I am making a documentary on the history of Spray Art. I met Rubem "Sadot" Fernandez in 1982. He let me watch him for 5 hours straight for three days. I watched him get arrested on the second night and helped his female companion load his stuff into the car. The third night I got to go to his apartment on calle Yucatan and he mezmerized me with his poetry and mysticism until daybreak. I met Hugo Montero around 10 years later in The French Quarter and he filled me in on much of the history and myths. Still trying to nail down just exactly when that was, with the friends I was visiting at the time. The cangogh.net sight is the most comprehensive on the history of the origins, but by the late '80s there were alot of people working in spray art. "El Guero" & "El Moreno" were the next to paint after Sadot with the "Cosmic" style. Two brother of "El Guero" took the art form to Miami via NYC. Also "El Gordo" (Victor Hernandez) appeared at this time and was the one to show Hugo Montero what he did. They met going to the same school sort of. Luis "El Mexican" took it to the West Coast he is one of the two Luises. The other was known as "El Luigi" I will be going to Mexico City next week to interview at least three prominent painters as well as Jose Luis Cuevas who was the sponser of AMPA (Asociacion Mexicana de Pintores en Aerosol)the first organized group of Spray Can Artists in Mexico City. I intend to release various videos in '09 using the footage I collect over the next 6-9 months. The working title of the longer more complete version is "Aersolgrafia: The Origin of Spray Art" but I have decided I will also make shorts highlighting each artist in half hour biographical segments. When I get through with the foundational painters, still living, I intend to continue meeting and documenting individuals who are prominent in the Spray Art world. Any more questions? Be in touch at: aerosologist@hotmail.comDerek please fill me in if you have the true origin story

Just returned from Mexico City and was able to talk to El Guero El Moreno El Cunado Ricardo Huet Jose Luis Cuevas Turns out many claims by artists are, shall we say, not quite the truth. If someone says they started in a particular year you can as a rule of thumb subtract 2 or 3 years from that figure. Seems like everyone wants to be the first even if they are not the best. I went to La Zona Rosa, Coyoacan, and La Alameda. I also found out Sadot was not necessarily suicidal and that perhaps he was murdered by a jealous husband. The plot thickensAnd to Rogue Painter... Every painter I talked to said that they intended to write the book but had not yet done it. Some have been meaning to for 10 - 20 years. Usually they intended to write this tome so they could place themselves advantageously in the scheme of things, but in the end they may not have written because they really didn't know the whole story or they were worried about being caught in a lie when all was said and done. Go figure.
