Idea for Stencil Paintings

I have been looking at all the stencil paintings, and while I have not done any to date, I was wondering...

I notice as I am sure everyone else does, that the edges of many stencils are fuzzy and/or washed out a bit. Has anyone tried "cleaning up" the edges of a stencil with a pallet knife or other sharp object? I would think this might be particularly effective with animal stencils to add some crispness to the edges and make adding a bit of detail possible. Anyway, as you can probably tell, I have been surfing the site again, looking at all the things I have not yet had time to try. Good times and great art to you all!

The only problem is that a pallet knife would make the edges different then the rest of the painting so it wouldnt really blend well. Also I find that using regular posterboard to cut the stencils out of you dont get the fuzziness
